He heard a single person arrive

After putting his stuff in the room, Adam heres the doorbell ring. "I guess another person has arrived." he comments to himself. Deciding to get aquainted with the people hes staying with, Adam heads downstairs to meet whoever it is.

He walks down the steps just as he sees Ms. Sterious walking out of the room, and sees a girl his age standing near the doorway with several bags. Seeing him coming down the stairs, she greets him. "Hey there. I guess you're one of the other students staying here, right? My name is Heather." she says

"Hey. I'm Adam." he says. "Looks like you've got a lot of stuff there. You want me to help you carry them?
