This choice: Shrink again to find shade and water • Go Back...Chapter #4Shrink again to try and find water by: DougTF   You feel light heated in this heat and realize two things: one, if you don't find water soon, you may pass out and die, and as small as you are, no one would ever find you, no matter where you are. But also, if you simply zap somewhere else, at this size, there are liable to be amazing dangers you can't account for...so, mad as it is, getting even smaller seems a decent choice. Besides, the smaller you get, the less water you need. Bracing yourself, you hit the button....
Next thing you know, you are sliding down a tan slope, and off the edge, plummetting into space, screaming, but then you hit another slope and the impact was nothing, didn't hurt in the least. You keep sliding and bouncing, really confused until you come to rest on this huge brown field... but on this field are lakes of water! You scramble to one and bend down, drinking, the cool water is like nothing else and you sit back after drinking your fill. Looking around, you realize the sun is blocked and the sky above you is a bunch of tan geometric shapes. You are standing on the shore of a really nice sized lake, and the landscape makes no sense: you didn't hit the button to travel to a new place, you just...shrank...more....
HOLY CRAP! The sky is sand grains, you must be standing on a root fiber of the tree under the sand, which is why the sky is blocked, and the lake...is a drop of water! Falling didn't hurt because you weigh so little you generate almost no force or momentum. You're microscopic, or at least you shrank by a similar order of magnitude, so now the sand grains are like city blocks to your new size! Half terrified, you look at the remote, expecting to see no button to enlarge, but no, the button now says restore or shrink more. Shuddering at what would happen if you shrank more, you go to hit the restore button but pause, looking up. Would you be crushed if you enlarged like this? How deep into the sand are you? Just how small are you, if you could literally swim in a drop of water?  indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
