"I'm just staying dry, just like you, and every other guard on patrol," said Gareth. "I don't like getting wet."

"Who does?" said Sally, with a sigh.

"Of course, there are some who don't mind, and keep on patrolling," said Garath, as he pointed his thumb over at a golem, who plodded along down the street. "Corporal Muck for you. Big silent type, but very handy in a brawl. Very hard to harm him, and, if worse comes to worse, add some more clay to him, pop him into an oven to bake for a few hours, and he's good to go."

"Can't say my family did much work with golems, although I know that they are hard workers," said Sally. "We've had some dealings with werewolves, mostly of the sort where they pay in advance, and ask us not to be in the shop that night, while they and about twenty of their wolf packmates show up, and eat everything in the place."

"Can't blame them," said Gareth. "Sometimes hunting in the wilds isn't all that good, and the Packs are trying to avoid any serious conflicts with humans, and others."

"What about your kind?" Sally asked. "I mean, I know you need blood to survive."

Gareth smiled. "There's a system set up. If you're of age, and happen to be of good health, you can just leave your window open, with a red flag sticking out, stating that you're available for a Meal. Vampire comes in, pulls the flag in, has a nice little chat with you, bites you on the wrist, or some such place, has about half a cup, puts a bandage on the wound, pays an agreed upon amount, and leaves. Then, in about three months, you can hang the flag out again."

"I suppose that makes sense," said Sally. "Keeps the Monster Slayers off your back."

"Yes, although I look for those who also fly a gold star on their flags," said Gareth. "It means they've reserved themselves for a Guard."

"And, I suppose you're looking for one of those?" Sally asked.

Gareth chuckled and said....
