Although Debbie and Julie weren't quite as inseparable as they used to be, their friendship had been rekindled some as of late. The girls would go bike riding and jogging through the desert a couple times a week to stay in shape, and last Sunday's jog proved more eventful than most.
Feeling particularly ambitious, Julie and Debbie had chosen a path through the desert that appeared to have been unused since the days when covered wagons traversed the land. After more than half an hour of tireless running, the girls had travelled nearly three miles into the desert, and just as they made the decision to turn back a rotting chunk of wood mostly hidden by overgrown weeds and brush caved in under Julie's weight. Her foot and part of her leg disappeared, seemingly swallowed up by the earth, but luckily little harm was done. The only injuries sustained were a slightly twisted ankle and a light scratch - a small price to pay for what would turn out to be such a daunting discovery.
After a brief struggle between Julie and the board, Julie retrieved her foot from the clutches of the earth and peeled back the rotting wood. What lay beyond was a cavern of some sort, which appeared to be quite expansive. It begged of them to explore, but they would need flashlights to find their way inside. The girls had agreed to return this weekend with the necessary supplies, and the weekend was finally here.
It excited Julie for more reasons than one, as did all her visits with Debbie. Her diminuitive friend was the very definition of adorable, and Julie felt strangely curious when in her presence. Julie knew Debbie did not share her curiosities; it had been made abundantly clear that Julie's feelings for Debbie were not reciprocated, but Julie couldn't help herself. She debated and fussed over what to wear. It needed to be something cute, but not so provocative it would make her friend uncomfortable.
