They had nearly finished their meal when Julie noticed something was bothering Tom. His gaze kept returning to the cook with whom the handsome cashier had consulted earlier, and there was something there. Suspicion? Recognition? Fear? Maybe not fear - Julie didn't think Tom was afraid of anybody - but there was something there.
"What is it?" Julie was slurping up the last of her drink, eyeing Tom as he eyed the cook.
"What's what?"
"You keep looking at that guy like you wanna fuck him or something," Julie said, giggling.
"Forget it. It's nothing," Tom said dismissively. It was something, but Tom didn't want to talk about it, so Julie decided to let it go.
"I gotta use the lady's room," Julie said.
"Cool."
Julie knew Tom long enough to understand things weren't cool. His eyes were too alert, for one thing. His back was too straight, his posture not as relaxed as she was accustomed to seeing. But more than all of that, it was just a vibe he was sending out, more unseen than seen.
Whatever it was, there was no use trying to pry it out of him. Julie left him at the table and went to answer mother nature's call.
The relief of a freshly emptied bladder was just beginning to kick in when unintelligable shouts carried to her from the lobby. Her head was cocked in an almost comical manner as she struggled to make out the jest of the argument, but the only thing Julie could make sense of were the occasional obscenities strung throughout the conversation. One thing of which she could be sure, was that Tom was one of the people involved in the dispute.
A "fuck you" that could only have come from Tom's voice stood out in the midst of the chaos, and the first thought to cross Julie's mind was that perhaps her food had been fucked with after all, and Tom hadn't wanted to address the issue in front of her. Julie wondered how plausible this theory might be as she hurriedly tore off a few sheets of toilet paper, and after a quick wipe down of her private areas she hiked up her pants and rushed for the door, not bothering to wash her hands. She was hoping to get into the mix and fire off a few curse words of her own, before things cooled off.
Just before Julie could shoulder the door open and burst into the lobby, gunfire erupted.
