This choice: Bring her back to the Living! • Go Back...Chapter #4Bring her back to the Living! by: Unknown I changed my mind last minute, deciding to be merciful and free the soul, but it was too late. One second I was in the middle of tons of shooting souls, and in the next second, I found myself lying on my back, head whoozy and all. My eyes fluttered open uncertainly and tried to adjust to my unusually dark surroundings.
Now, where was I again?
I grimaced in pain as I straightened my legs. Now, that certainly hurt like mad. Experimentally, I shifted my leg once more, only to have a nasty electric shock surge through my ankles. Oh darn, so it was fractured.
"YOU IDIOT!" A familiar girl's voice screeched from underneath my clenched palm.
"Woah, woah!" I gasped. "I can't believe- What...?"
The soul cursed me every single nasty word in the dictionary, before yelling, "AT LEAST LET GO OF ME!"
Too stunned to speak, I obediently did as I was told.
The star-like soul seemed to leap off my open palm before bursting into an even blindingly bright light, growing larger and larger, till... till it formed a young girl, who looked about a year younger than I was. I couldn't really see her features in the dark, but I could tell that man, she looked crazily mad. Mad at me, that was.
"Ass!" The girl cried out indignantly, before kicking me over and over again at my fractured ankle.
Wincing in pain, I begged, "Stop! Oww! Stop please!"
To my surprise, she did. And suddenly, fear flickered across her features.
"You... brought me back from the dead. I..." She inspected herself with shock. "I'm alive..."
"I don't know... I'm sorry..." I apologized uncertainly.
"I'm not gonna forgive you," she snapped. Then she looked to me. "So where are we?" she demanded.
"My best guess is that we're in a hole. And a really deep one, I'm guessing."
"What?" Her eyes bulged in disbelief "You rob me from my chance to rest in peace and put me in damn hole?"
"I didn't do it on purpose," I replied in my defense. "I fell in here.... by accident."
She calmed down, before straining her neck upwards trying to estimate the exact height of the hole. "So it's Tessa to the rescue again," she groaned. "Alright, what are you waiting for? Get onto my back and climb out!"
That girl named Tessa was blind. "If you haven't noticed, my leg is fractured!"
"Oh, oopsies."
Then, an idea struck me. It required me to be self-sacrificial, but I was willing to risk it. Besides, it was dark, and there would probably be no search teams out in search of me. I didn't fancy my chances staying out in the woods all night. And don't forget, Mom would definitely go nuts if I didn't return tonight.
"Get on my shoulders," I told her. "Pull yourself out."
"Are you serious?" She asked me incredulously. "Then you?"
"Follow the path down after you get out," I directed her. "There's a house at the end. It's my house. Inform someone there, and ask them to rescue me!"
She stared at me thoughtfully for a moment. "Alright," she agreed finally. "Get down on fours."
It was harder said then done. Every single tiny movement caused my poor fractured limb to tremble with agony. But in the end, I succeeded anyway, panting away.
"Hurry!" I pleaded.
Tessa obviously deliberately took her own sweet time to climb onto my back to pay me back from my actions earlier.
"Hurry!" I screamed this time. "I'm breaking, dammit!"
She cast one scornful look at me and hauled herself out of the hole. Really, it surprised me that she managed it. Even on my back, the opening of the hole was more than a head higher than her. She must have had a lot of hidden muscles.
"Done," she informed me, arrogantly. "I'm out. You alright down there?"
"Yeah," I gasped. "Now go inform them!"
An evil grin crossed her features. Uh oh, bad news. Now what? Maybe I shouldn't have so readily trusted a dead girl. Too late to regret.
"On one condition," she smiled evilly. "You send me back to the Dead where I belong- back to the limbo."
WHAT? I didn't even know how I got in there in the first place! How'd you expect me to know how to get back?
"I... don't know how..." I admitted truthfully. "Sorry."
"Well then," The girl's smile faded. "Sorry to you then. You're staying down there!"
The girl turned to leave, before retracing her steps and returning to the entrance of the hole. "Please!" she begged all of the sudden. "There's no other way back! Only you! You have to! I can't believe I'm stuck with an idiot like you!"
"OK..." I said a bit too quickly.
"Okay?" She asked excitedly. "Will you? Will you? Will you send me back?"
I didn't know what to say, my mouth felt extremely, extremely dry. I could send her back, send her back and let her rest in peace in the 'Beyond' where she so wished. Or I could refuse. She had no choice, she had to stick around me, and if I died, all her chances of returning would be severed. She had to keep me alive at all cost. And I admit it, I did like this girl's company despite her rough demeanour.
And then I thought of an unusually mean thought: I could make her serve me. If I could bring back souls from the dead, I could make them serve me by promising them that I would return them to the dead.
The moment I thought it, I immediately mentally slapped myself. How cruel of me! How could I?
So what? So what now?
I had the power to agree or refuse, what should I do? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
