You look down at the subject bound below you on a flat stone slab, bound psionically by the Illithid master who gives you tasks such as this experiment you knew what was happening in his mind. He would be raging against the Illithid's compulsion but unless the Illithid lost concentration he would not be able to move his limbs. That was this Illithid's way, he did not obliterate thought as most of them did, preferring to taunt and torture the slaves. Another fact you remember for later, stored in the back of your mind while the dutiful slave sat there in the front of your mind and fooled the Illithid into thinking you were a thrall.

Instructions floated into your head “Cast the spell” and so you did, distaste hovered in the back of your head as you summoned the weave, tugging one thread loose to guide your spell you tie a glyph to the subject. It was a variant of one you have seen cast before.

As a boy the adults of your village had discovered one traveler bore a mother cyst, a few scrapings in another person of which would cause them to grow a cyst of their own, the bearer of the mother cyst will then be able to influence their thoughts, create illnesses, delirium and other ailments. Recognising your talent as a spellcaster the traveler explained the glyph to you before using it on a villager to prime them for a cyst. Panicking you tried to protect the villager and ended up casting a flare spell that set the traveler's hair alight. This distracted him long enough for the villagers to subdue him.

This glyph was similar enough that you're sure it is priming the subject for some mind affecting parasite. “It is necessary” you think, feeling that ever present power being drawn from the shadow weave somewhere deeper in the machine you are being forced to work in. “The lesser evil for the greater good.”

You turn and see thralls draging the figure along behind the Illithid. They lock the door behind them leaving you inside
