"Your grandpa was certain you'd inherit the power," Dad said, "but I wasn't so sure. It's only been passed down from father to son, in the past. There was no sense showing you something that you'd never be able to do."
I wiped the tears from my eyes. "And... you're sure now?"
"I got a clue," he said, "when you reached for the 'empty' spot on the bookshelf. And, of course, you're invisible, now."
"I am?" I looked down. Sure enough, there I wasn't. "Holy cow! How do I stop this?"
"If you'll notice, sweetheart, there's a slight tingle at the base of your skull."
He wasn't kidding when he said it was slight. If he hadn't called it to my attention, I never would have noticed it. "Is that what turns me into a ghost?"
"Exactly," he said. "Concentrate on turning it off."
I had nothing to lose by trying. I imagined squeezing the source of the tingle. Sure enough, it stopped, and I came back into view. "This is going to be so cool." I turned my attention back to the book. "Everything about my powers is in here?"
"Everything my dad could figure out," Dad said. "Have you discovered 'X-ray' vision yet?"
"I think so," I said. "Is Mom having twins?"
"That's the way it looks to me," he replied. "Of course, we can't tell her about this."
"Why not?"
"Modern science hasn't yet reached the point where they can determine if a woman is carrying twins in her first month. If we told her, she'd tell her OB/GYN, and that would lead to us being examined."
"This is so amazing," I said. "I can't wait to try out my powers."
"Have at it," Dad said. "Just be careful not to overdo it. It's like a muscle. As you use it, you'll be able to use it more, but overuse will tire you out. Grandpa's book can help you, and I'll be able to answer any other questions you have."
I excitedly brought the book to my room, thinking about what I could now do. I could become invisible. I could pass through solid objects. I could see through them, too.
Once I got the hang of this, I'd be able to figure out whatever I wanted.
