Bryan was reading a book in his room when he heard the front door bang open. He tensed up immediately, knowing what Max could be like when he was in a door slamming mood. The sound of Max stomping through the living room didn't comfort him at all. Quite the opposite. He became even more filled with dread. If Max was stomping through the house, then he was probably in a good mood. And Max in a good mood was far worse than him in a bad mood. In a bad mood, all Bryan had to do was keep out of Max's way and he was relatively safe. But in a good mood, Max liked to lord whatever it was that had made him happy over Bryan. Max in a good mood spelled big trouble for Bryan. He could only hope that his stepfather wouldn't---
"BRYAN! Git your ass in here!"
Well, so much for hope. With resignation, Bryan put his book aside and swiftly made his way downstairs. Dawdling would just make things worse for him.
In the middle of the living room, flushed with excitement, stood Max. He was beaming like an eighteen-wheeler on a midnight road, confirming that Bryan was in for the worse. He was also holding something.
"Check out what I just won!" said Max, holding out something for Bryan to see.
