Michael Anderson opened his hand, revealing an object the size and shape of an elongated egg.
“What is it?” asked Debbie, his wife, watching the light glint off its brushed metallic surface.
Her husband shrugged. “It never had a name. We only ever called it Prototype #1.”
There was silence for a moment.
Their 17-year-old daughter Tessa broke the silence.
“What does it do?”
“Probably lets you get free cable,” said her 15-year-old brother Robbie wryly.
“COOL!” yelled Billy and Kimmy in chorus. One of the eight-year-old twins made a grab for the strange object, but their father moved it away too quickly.
“It does not get you free cable,” he said. “Besides,” he mumbled, “we already have something that does that.”
Debbie rolled her eyes and gave him a grave look. “Are you sure they aren’t going to miss it…whatever it is?”
Mike shrugged.
“I don’t think so. After Tranfor-Tech went out of business, the lawyers were supposed to take charge of all the important technologies, but when I went in afterward to do the final clean-up…there it was.”
“So you took it.”
“Why shouldn’t I?”
“That would depend on what it does.”
“Tell us what it does!” chimed the children in unison.
“Well…” said their father. “You hold it in your hand like this…then you think of something. And then you point this end at something” He pointed the narrow end at each of them in turn.
“And then POOF!” He wheeled and pointed the device at the candle in the table centerpiece. The candle glowed briefly…
And was suddenly gone.
In its place was a small frog.
Debbie and the children gasped. The frog, not nearly so impressed, began hopping across the table. Mike pointed the device at it again and suddenly the frog was once again a candle.
The candle rolled off the end of the table and was nimbly caught by Robbie, who handed it to his mother and turned to his father.
“Does it work on people?”
“It sure does,” said his father, smiling. “Watch,” he said, pointing it at…
