As she sat down, memories of her former life—practicing soccer drills, kicking the ball with power, and leading the team on the field—flooded her mind. But upon glancing up, she was met with familiar faces that were seeing her for the first time as a girl.
The thought was simultaneously freeing and terrifying.
“Don’t forget the family dinner tonight! Everyone’s looking forward to seeing you in your new dress!” her father said, excitement trickling through his words.
“New… dress?” Christina echoed, worry fluttering in her chest.
Her mother leaned in; her eyes sparkling. “Yes! The dress we bought yesterday for the special occasions! It’s going to be so much fun! I can’t wait for you to show it off!”
Christina felt a wave of nausea wash over her. A fancy dress? It felt so foreign, so unlike her. Gone were the days of being with the family, wearing a shirt instead of the usual casual t-shirts as a maximum! She miss out on that before it even happened
Still, her thoughts were interrupted by the ring of her phone in her pocket. She fished it out to see a text from James, her best friend and fellow teammate: *“Yo! Can’t wait to see you today! Are you fulling your promise to show me your new dress, sine I can not join you for the family event tonight!”
“Oh, I can’t do that…” Christina muttered to herself, her stomach twisting. There was no way to explain this—how could she face him, knowing he would have no recollection of their past friendship? They had grown up kicking soccer balls together, sharing laughter during long practices, and now James would only know her as Christina.
Pressing her lips together, she took a breath and responded. *“Yeah.I I have promised this to you, you will see me wearing the dress later.”
With a heavy heart, Christina left her home to make her way to school, each step filled with fear and uncertainty. How will school be now? Would James and all the people at school treat her now as a girl? As she approached the assembly hall of her school, she could feel a multitude of emotions rising inside her—anxiety, curiosity, and a strange sense of anticipation.
“Hey, Christina!” one of his former soccer teammates, a handsome guy called Richard called out, waving enthusiastically. “Great to see you! You look nice today”
