Chapter #3

Find a student on your campus, and screw with h...

For several very long seconds, I stood there just staring at the screen in thought. On the one hand, what had just happened was impossible on so many levels that I couldn’t even fathom them all. Yet it had happened all the same, this program obviously not caring for the laws of science. The program could reshape people, probably anything, to whatever parameters were set in. The possibly were endless. That was on the one hand.

On the other was my brain trying to reassert some semblance of reality on the situation. That couldn’t happen, it said to me. This is either a dream, a drug induced hallucination, or I’ve gone of the deep end and could be laying in a bed somewhere drooling while my little fantasy world plays out in my head. I didn’t particularly like that thought, yet at the same time, my inability to even venture a guess as to how this program worked made it seem possible. I considered going to the campus nurse and getting a full medical workout, CAT scans and MRI’s and anything else they wanted to throw at me.

But really, that didn’t sound like much fun. This was possibly a golden opportunity, and I was just going to leave it here while I go get poked with needles and pills? Not a chance. I decided that there was only one of two options. Either I was crazy or something, in which case the proper authorities would catch on to me before long and take me off to the funny farm, in which case I might as well enjoy my little fantasy while it lasted. That, or this was all very real and I sure as hell better enjoy it. So either way, seemed like it was time for some reality warping entertainment.

I didn’t really want to go lugging around my hard drive all day, and remotely using the program when I cant see what’s happening would be dull. A thought occurs to me to solve this little conundrum. I dig in my desk draws and find my PDA. Nothing fancy, it just had a calculator, a clock, my schedule and a memo pad. But if I could copy this program into it, than we might be onto something. I hook the PDA onto the computer and make a copy of the program to install. It takes a huge chunk of memory, so much so I have to clear out all my stuff from the PDA. A small sacrifice in the name of having the ability to warp the world in my pocket. The upload doesn’t take to long, and ones its done I pocket my PDA, switch off the computer and head out.

I head to the library first. Maybe I’m something of a nerd, but is has always been the place to go and chill for me. Lame, I know, but at least there’s always a few people around, yet never to crowded so that anything I might do would cause a scene. The familiar smell of books and ink hits my nose as I enter the library, the familiar hush only broken by the sounds of pages being turned. I stroll over to one of the tables, pulling a book off the shelves as I do and pretend to read as I slide my PDA behind the book and start looking through it, getting a feel for the program. Up at the top of the screen was a tab labeled ‘preferences’ Figuring that was as good a place as any to start, I open it up and take a look.

The window that pops up has a bunch of boxes to check off. I start playing with some of them, reading the little pop up windows when I highlight them to figure out what each one does. I set the transformation speed to manual, so I can make each change as quick or as slow as I want it to be. There is another box labled auto adjustments. This ones already checked, the program tells me that its made so that any changes automatically reformat anything needed, such as clothing or strength to account for changed weights. I leave that is. One of the last boxes is a selector with two settings. Overt and subtle. I take a look at the help window which reads ‘Sets how noticeable changes are to everyone but the user. Overt means everyone can tell the change is taking place. Subtle will mean that the change is not noticed, even by the recipient. I click the subtle box for now, since I’d rather keep things on the down low until I get the hang of this thing.

Now that my parameters are set, I think its time to start some changing. I scan the library for potential targets. I recognize one of the girls sitting at a nearby table as Alice Hall. She’s a kind of nerdy girl, with short red hair, glasses and freckles. She’s not bad looking, a little overweight maybe, with pale skin from lack of sunlight. She’s almost a genius to, if I remember correct she’s in the top ten students. Seems like as good a target as any.

I set alices name into the search bar, and a second later her image appears on screen. The programs ready, now what do I want to do?
