Marlin the Magician was powerful, wise and kind to those he interacted with. But it was not always so. In his younger days, Marlin was part of a multi-kingdom taskforce dedicated to the extermination of demons who had intruded into their realm.
Their last mission before the group broke up was going after an Erinye Succubae. An all female demonic species, the Erinye Succubae fed on the desires of it's victims with unpredictable effects on the victim, up to and including death, though unlike many demonic species, death from their effects was unusually rare.
They tracked her through her victims, to the slums of an out of the way town. Marlin was the first to find her, and when he tried to kill her, she begged for mercy.
Marlin, one of few who could keep a demoness prisoner, accepted her plea, to fierce disagreement of his team. He left the team and returned to Traevan, where the demoness, named Aeria, was kept captive within a magic circle. Over the years, Marlin realized that in order to keep her alive, he would have to feed her with his desires. Fortunately, his studying of her allowed him to more accurately predict the effects that would happen when he fed her his desires, and he had some counter potions in place to counteract the effects once he had fed her.
Today happened to be the day he would have to feed her again, so he goes down to the basement level to his lab.
