And so, Jessica peered into the box. A large silver bracelet glinted in the sunlight.
She twisted it, so she could see into the inner rim of the bracelet.
"Specially comissioned piece, by Marshall & Bros."
And she held her breath. She knew the firm. It was an insanely expensive group of jewelers gathered together with a reputation to create stunning pieces of art in several precious metals. While relatively simple, the bracelet had a flair of elegance and a small part in the wrist embossed with an unusual design reminiscent of an ellipse formed by progressively larger circles, with a part of it returning to the original point of origin and another arm going down further down the way with larger and larger circles.
"God. A real Marshall & Bros. article. And my secret admirer didn't even leave a note or a name."
And so she was left with a piece of jewelry she knew to be expensive with no way of rejecting it.
Stunned beyond words, Jessica opened the bangle and fitted it into her wrist. She noted it was quite large for her hand, though not enough to fall off unless she made an active effort. In any case, she fitted it and started looking for the clasp to seal it shut. With a click, the silver contraption clicked shut.
And Jessica took a minute to admire the results. The bracelet, she decided, looked nice on her. She would ask who had entered her office to give him (or her, in due case, she wasn't prejudiced) a nice surprise. With a spring in her step, she stepped outside her office to go looking for the building janitor.
But as soon as she did so, she stopped for a second. Strange. It was, for a minute, as if a draft had passed through, or rather, into her skirt, touching her thighs and butt. But she had felt no such draft.
Anyway, she told herself, it must have been my imagination.
And so she went and found Harvey Jenkins, the resident janitor. She was hardly surprised, though a tad disappointed, to know he hadn't seen anybody go into her office. Jessica buried her hands in the lab coat and marched back to her office. Slumped into her chair, she checked again the paperwork to be done that day and buried herself in work.
Unknown to her, she was being observed. The observer noted the bracelet now adorning Jessica's wrist and smiled broadly. Jessica was on her way to becoming something greater.
Much greater.
