You awake early in the morning. It’s a good hour before your usual wake up time, when your parents have to force you out of bed, but you’re feeling like a new person. And because you feel like a new person, you spend a little extra time getting yourself ready for school; a few more minutes brushing your dark hair this way and that, so you can see how you look in a variety of styles, trying out a few more outfits to see how they fall on your figure, and just a smidge more time primping. By the time your parents knock on your door, you’ve dressed yourself in a band shirt, jeans, and a pair of your favorite sneakers –high top, of course.
Breakfast is nutritious and delicious, and you chat cheerfully between bites about your plans for today with your parents, who listen and give their own advice in a way they hadn’t before. Once you’re finished with that, you pack your backpack and skip cheerfully to the bus stop where you meet your best friend, who smiles knowingly at you.
“Happy Monday, Jo,” she says slyly.
“As if there’s anything about Mondays to celebrate?”
“There is for us.”
“You brought the stuff then?”
“Of course, it’s all in here.” Sarah pats her stomach. “Dana gave me most of it this morning, said I could do whatever I wanted with it.”
“Doesn’t she need any for her friends?”
“That’s what I asked her. Apparently she wants to have a ‘her day’, so she gave it to me.”
“Your sister’s so cool. I wish she came around more often.”
“I wish your brother came around more. Have you guys found him yet?”
“No, not yet. Thankfully my parents aren’t too worried about him anymore. Not after last night.”
“So they’re part of the team now?”
“Totally. Now the Johnsons and the Paks are one big family.” The two of you giggle girlishly. You continue to talk until the bus arrives, and then the two of you veer off to talk with others.
You do not see her again until you’re off the bus and in the hallways, talking to your friend Belinda when Sarah skips up to you two.
“Happy Monday, guys!” she says brightly.
“What’s happy about it?” Belinda groans. “The weekend is over, and now we’re stuck here for five more days.”
“It could be worse,” you shrug. “It could be finals week.”
“And to celebrate it not being finals week yet, I got us some candy!” Sarah reaches into her skirt pocket and digs out a small plastic bag full of blue gummy balls and showcases them to you. You and Belinda trade a look.
“What… is that?” you ask dubiously.
“Blueberry gummies. I made them with my family last night.”
“So the Pak Pack is a bunch of candymakers now?”
“We were trying something new, Jo. Come on, at least try it. I think they’re pretty good, but I want a second opinion. Please?” She looks between you two with a pleading look. You sigh and fish one out of the bag, popping it into your mouth where it immediately dissolves into you.
“It’s… not bad, actually,” you admit with a surprised expression on your face. Sarah smiled proudly, then holds the bag out to Belinda. She hesitates, and then sighs and plucks one out of the bag and swallows it. You place a hand on her shoulder to steady her as the light goes out in her eyes. Sarah slips the bag back into her pocket.
Suddenly your vision swims, and when it clears you’re looking at Sarah Pak from an additional pair of eyes.
“Not bad,” you say in your new voice, brushing Joanna’s hand off your shoulder and rolling your neck. “The flavor could use some work though. In any case, it’s a good way to start the day. Anyone else you planning to share those with?”
“I’ve got a couple of people in mind. You’ll find out soon enough.” As Belinda, you roll your eyes.
“Cryptic much? Well, whatever. It’s not like I care that much.” And then the three of you split off, you yourself sinking down into Belinda’s mind while her consciousness returns to the forefront.
Sarah, meanwhile, scuttles to the girls locker room, where she fishes out a worm and shoves it into a locker. The worm nestles itself deep into a pair of shorts. Once you’re satisfied, you scurry her out to find someone to make a study date with. Meanwhile, you’re discussing the latest episode of Joanna’s favorite show with Helen Kendall and arguing about the dreaminess of each boy relative to each other. However, you make no moves to take her.
It isn’t until second period rolls around that your plan is put into motion. Suddenly you feel your worm being jostled and have to cling to the side of your hiding spot to prevent being thrown out. Then you feel the snug sensation of being pressed up against a something warm. A thrill of anticipation runs through you, and you slowly begin to press against the fabric of the silky material.
You waste no time in pressing your advantage, flattening yourself and working your way around until you can feel flesh. Emboldened, you carefully expand yourself until you find a crease between the fabric and skin and slip inside. You’re met by a mass of curly hair, but you slowly weave around it until it breaks and suddenly you’re surrounded by warm, absorbent membranes. You press deeper, questing for more warmth, until you feel a familiar sinking sensation.
And then you blink with new eyes. And then you smile with your new mouth. And then you brush the blonde hair from in front of your face. Then you sink down inside of your new brain and let the persona come back to the fore; your host is headed to the track for PE, and you’ve no desire to exercise for her.
Afterwards however, you’re glad to step into the life of your new host:
