"Hey hon," Frank said. "How is your mother."
He gave Irene a hug, and an affectionate kiss.
She said, "Still nagging about when she's going to be a grandma, but otherwise fine."
"Man...won't she ever give it a rest?" Frank said. He was still dressed as he had been when he left John's house, wearing the football t-shirt, jeans, and sandals.
"Those adoption waiting lists are a mile long, and I'm not keen on going to a sperm bank to get from some anonymous donor," he said.
"Mom had a new suggestion," Irene said. "She said that I could be artificially inseminated with John's sperm, or you could be with Bill's sperm." Bill was Irene's older brother. "That way, the baby would have family genes from both sides."
"So...she's given up on adoption?" Frank said.
"Yeah...she wants a grandbaby that's actually related to her; not that she wouldn't love to have an adopted grandchild. That's just her preference; plus, she knows about the long waits for adoption, and she doesn't want to wait that long. 'I'll be ancient or dead before I'm a grandma,' she said. She opts to wait nine months, not an indefinite period of time.
"Well, we wouldn't want to disappoint her or make her have to be patient," Frank rolled his eyes as he spoke.
"Actually Frank...she's right. If we're to have our own child time isn't on our side. We're both in our forties. Our ovaries aren't what they used to be."
"Okay, okay...you're right," Frank said. He had actually been thinking of this very thing for the past few months. At least until he lost his job, and the device fell into his lap.
They had retreated into the living room and sat on the couch together.
"So...if we go through with this who will carry the child," Frank asked. "I guess it ought to be me; I have hips that your mother has not so subtly referred to as 'child bearing'," he said with one eyebrow cocked.
"Well Frank, I actually have spent last night and this morning thinking this over quite a bit," Irene answered. "I think we both should become pregnant. Me by John, and you by Bill."
"Both of us?" Frank replied.
"Yes...we've got to move quickly, and if we don't want an only child, then why not? We can help each other through our pregnancies." Irene was getting excited.
Frank was intrigued, but also concerned. He had just lost his job, after all, and Irene didn't even know it. He didn't want to tell her to ruin her excitement. He was sure she'd abandon the notion of having kids without a reliable income. He would just have to figure out a way to use the device to bring in some cash.
"Imagine," he smiled. "Both of us pregnant."
"I think you'll be so cute," she returned his smile. "Just think...we can go shopping for maternity clothes together."
"Ah... Irene... you know I'm not into shopping."
"I think you'll change your mind about shopping if it has anything to do with a new baby."
"You know...I might at that," Frank said, and then reached out with his manicured, nail polished hands, and pulled Irene close. She melted into his arms and they kissed passionately.
"Oh Frank...I'm so excited!"
"Me too, Irene, me too."
Frank and Irene...
