Chapter #3

Vision Problems

As Skander started reading, he started to drift off into sleep. Even though he slept through his alarm, he felt tired. As Skander fell asleep, he started to feel a strange feeling in his eyes. He figured that it was just his tired eyes. "SKANDER JONES!" His English teacher yelled. "No falling asleep in my classroom!"

"Sorry Mrs. Pinckett," Skander yawned. "I really don't feel well. Can I go to the Nurse?"

"Fine, I'll write you a pass," Mrs. Pinckett answered reluctantly. As she was writing his pass, Skander began to notice the weird feeling in his eyes again. This time though, his eyes were open. As he looked at Mrs. Pinckett's desk, he noticed he was able to see right through it like it wasn't there. He screamed bloody murder. "Skander, are you okay?" The teacher asked.

"No, I need to get home! I'm in pain!" Skander lied. He needed to ask his mother about this.

"Just go to the Nurse already! I have a class to teach," Mrs. Pinckett insisted. Skander ran through the halls to the Nurse, somehow faked a fever, and got a one way ride home from his mother.

"Mom, I have a question for you," Skander informed his mother about his X-ray vision. "Why can I do that?"

"Well, the answer is quite simple, yet simultaneously unbelievable. Skander, you and I are actually aliens. The last of our kind in fact," Mrs. Jones explained. "Our race has a very rare trait where some can develop super powers. It is extremely rare. The last of our race to develop powers died 500 years ago. However, before I left the planet with you on a regular trade mission, our planet blew up. When I returned to the site of our planet, it was gone. I fled to the first planet I could find, which was Earth. You and I are the only ones left!" She started to cry.

"Oh, I did not know that." Skander said with a look of absolute shock.

"That's not all though," Mrs. Jones added. "I read up on this rare trait, because the doctors knew that you had it since you were born. Apparently, on different planets with different atmospheres, different things can happen with the trait. It depends on the elements in the atmosphere. Our home planet had a atmosphere made mostly of oxygen and water vapor. However, I read that nitrogen makes the super power trait much stronger and more developed. Since this atmosphere is made of almost 80% nitrogen, expect a lot of powers and changes soon. The powers usually develop when the person turns 17. You turned 17 one week ago. This seems right."

"Well, I'm going to be developing powers. I might as well become a superhero!" Skander cheered up. "I think just having X-ray vision is pretty lame though. You can't do much with that."

"In due time," Mrs. Jones assured Skander. "Soon, you will have more. Until then, you should get some rest. You didn't sleep well, did you."

Mrs. Jones and Skander arrived at the Jones household, and Skander immediately ran to his bed. He fell asleep almost immediately.

When he woke up, he felt different. He walked over to the bathroom, and noticed that his once skinny, tall body became a muscular one. He looked like a junior bodybuilder, built with big, ripped muscles. He also felt stronger. He decided to test his strength by going to his basement gym. He has been trying to bulk up, but nothing worked. Now, he needed to see if he got stronger. He entered the gym, which only had a couple of weights, a barbell, and a bar to do pull ups. Skander's pull up record before was only 3, but now he felt unstoppable. He walked up to the bar, jumped onto it, and started pulling up. It was incredibly easy. He started doing it with one hand, while holding the heaviest dumbbell he could find in the other. It was still incredibly easy. "I've definitely acquired super strength. What about speed?" He asked himself. He cleared the middle of the room, and started to run around in a circle. He got faster and faster and faster, all without tiring. "Speed, check. Flight?" He jumped into the air, and started hovering in the air. He moved around, and landed softly. "Check. Durability? If not, this is going to hurt." He took the 20 pound dumbbell, held it over his 8 pack abs, and dropped it. It bounced off harmlessly, leaving no mark, and with Skander feeling no pain. "Check, thankfully. What else can I do?" He went back upstairs to his computer, and looked up a list of super powers. "What about laser vision?" He took a piece of scrap paper, and focused on trying to vaporize it. Eventually, a beam of light came out of his eyes, setting the paper ablaze. "Huh, I wonder if I can make it different colors. It would be cool to have blue laser eyes." He took another piece of paper, and focused on it, this time thinking about blue. Somehow, it worked, and the paper burned blue. "Cool, what else is here? Telekinesis." He concentrated on lifting his trash can. Soon, the can lifted into the air. Then, he made his bed with his mind, making sure he could do specific things. Then, for the hell of it, he lifted his bed, both with his arms and mind. They were both very easy for him. "Next is, walking on water." Skander, still only in his shorts, went outside to his pool, and stepped onto the water, only to notice that he was not going under. He thought about going underwater, and he fell in, only to notice that he could breathe and see clearly underwater. What can't I do? He thought. He swam back up to the surface, where he tried to make an energy ball in his hand, similar to the Dragon Ball series. It also worked. As he fired it straight up, he noticed his mother coming home. She must have gone out food shopping. Before he was to go into the house to help her and tell her about his powers, he watched as the energy ball exploded high in the sky. He hoped that he did not hit a plane.

"Hi Skander, you look different," his mother commented on Skander's new physique.

"Yeah, just found my powers. There are a lot, and I'm still finding more," Skander retorted. He listed off all the powers he's found. "I think if I become a superhero though, I'm going to need a costume."

"Yeah, I can make you one," Mrs. Jones said.

"Thanks mom!" Skander said happily. "Well, I'm going to see if I have more powers. See you when I'm done." Skander went back up to his room. "Okay, strength, speed, durability, flight, telekinesis, laser eyes, walking on water, breathing underwater, energy balls, x-ray vision, what else? Teleportation?" He focused on himself being on his bed rather than in his chair. Nothing happened. "Oh well, guess I'm flying everywhere. How terrible," he said sarcastically. "I don't think shape shifting is something that I'd have." He continued skimming through the lengthy page. He then came across psychokinesis. "Includes pyrokinesis, metalkinesis and hydrokinesis. Some telekinetics also have these powers. Let's see if I'm that someone!" He took a glass of water, and tried to make the water float. It worked. Next, he tried to create a ball of fire in his hand. It worked. He made sure that the smoke did not set of the smoke alarm. Then, he tried to bend his metal trash can without his super strength. It became a mess of metal. Finally, at the bottom of the page, he noticed force fields. Skander tried to conjure up a force field. He saw a small translucent sphere hovering in the air. He bent the shape around, making it flat, then a square, then a cube. The then through a pencil at it. The pencil bounced off. He then tried to make a one way force field. He telekinetically retrieved the pencil, then threw it again. It bounced off one side of the field. He retrieved the pencil again, turned the force field around, and threw the pencil, which passed right through. "Awesome. All these powers. Once mom's done with my suit, I can be a superhero! I think I'll be The Blaze." Skander made that decision, and went downstairs. "Mom, when you make my costume, can you make it with this in mind? I decided my name was The Blaze. Thanks mom!" He requested.

"Sure." His mother responded. I hope he uses his powers for good. She thought. Unbeknownst to her, Skander heard that, because he can read minds. He went to the kitchen to make himself some lunch. He decided to make a sandwich. As he was cutting it in half, he cut his finger. The cut closed immediately though. "Regenerative healing. I can get used to this," he laughed as he ate his sandwich.

Rules for continuing this story:

Don't kill Skander, and keep his powers consistent. If you add some, make sure he goes through the "discovering a new power" process. Keep Skander a hero, but if you want to make an evil super villain, be my guest. With that, feel free to add on! Don't be shy!
