Sunday evening and Jasper finished the last of his maths homework. He closed the book, capped his pen and swivelled around in his chair to surf the 'net. He brought up the site for the local newspaper and checked the forecast. Every single day for the next week was going to be boiling hot. He checked through the weather warnings. No fires, no barbeques, keep out of the sun...
"All schools closed by local Board of Education"
Jasper read the message again. Due to the extreme heat, all schools in the metropolitan area were to be closed for a week. Jasper grinned. A weeklong free holiday! Awesome. He packed his bag and then left his room. His parents were in the living-room, watching television.
"...and that concludes the news for this evening..." said the announcer on the nightly news. David Davian changed the channel to watch sports while Jasper's mother started doing the ironing.
"Lucky kid," said Jasper's father, "No school for you this week!"
"I know," said Jasper. He sat down. "I think it's already getting to me, I'm feeling kinda woozy".
"Have dinner, then you can go sleep," said his mother.
Jasper headed into the kitchen. His mother was a phenomenal cook. A huge pizza and an entire pan of lasagna was cooling on the island counter.
"Aren't you guys eating?" Jasper asked.
"We've already had two pizzas between us," said Jasper's dad, "You can have the rest".
"Okay".
And Jasper sat down to eat.
"Our little boy's growing up so fast," said Jasper's mother, smiling at her husband. David grinned, "He's fine, sweetheart. He's healthy, he's gotta good appetite and he's doing well in school. What else could we ask for?"
Jasper's mother looked up when she heard the dishwasher door close.
"Done!" Jasper shouted, "I'm off to bed!"
Jasper's mother headed into the kitchen and gasped. The entire pizza and the whole pan of lasagna were gone. That kid sure knew how to eat!...Aaah but he was a growing boy. Nothing wrong with that...
