After the storm that Sammy had caused, he had to force himself to not tell Cody. He knew it would be a relief to tell someone; it was a secret that was too large for a kid like him to handle, but he knew better. He didn't want to freak his friend out or lose him. He had enough problems at the moment. No need to add another.
School let out, and Sammy had convinced his mother to let Cody and Jake come over. They picked out a movie and sat in front of the television munching popcorn.
Cody threw a piece at Jake's head as the movie began. Jake turned and responded with his own barrage. The three boys laughed, and finally started watching the movie.
It was the Incredibles, and Sammy's mind began to wander. If he had super powers, was he a superhero? And just how many powers did he have?
The movie ended, and the boys ran outside. After several games had passed, they flopped down on the grass. Cody and Jake were arguing over who won the last game of tag, when Sammy interrupted.
"If you had a superpower, what would it be?"
Cody responded immediately. "Flying."
Jake snorted. "Don't be stupid. Super strength, or fire. C'mon, wouldn't it be cool to shoot fire out of your hands?"
"Or lasers out of your eyes?" Cody put in.
"What about names? I would be..." Jake started. "Dark Lord Spartan Tiger King."
Cody pushed himself up on his elbows. "'Dark Lord Spartan Tiger King?'"
Jake looked put out. "Well, you do better."
Cody grinned. "Captain Talon or Captain Sparrow."
"What about Sage or Phoenix?" Sammy suggested.
"Awesome!" Jake and Cody said.
"But... what's a Sage?" Jake asked.
That night, Sammy asked his older sister to make him a superhero suit. In the back of his mind, he wondered if his sister had superpowers too. To his surprise, she had rummaged through her desk and pulled out a piece of material. "So Mom finally told you, did she?"
Sammy's eyes widened. "So are you like me?"
His sister (whose name was Ashlynn) unfolded the material revealing a pretty cool superhero costume, just Sammy's size. "Yeah, but not as powerful. I only have telekinesis and super speed. So kid, what's the name you are gonna have?"
Sammy shuffled his feet. "Um...I was thinking Sage or Phoenix."
Ashlynn pulled her sewing kit from her desk as well. "Hmm... lame. Based on Mom's prediction, I'd call myself ' the Temporal Shadow' or 'the Time Lord' or..." Ashlynn smiled and tapped her lip. "This is my favorite... 'Iridium'."
"Iridium?" Sammy asked, crinkling his eyebrows.
"It's a type of metal that we can only get on Earth through asteroids and tin." Ashlynn explained. "It's the strongest, rarest, densest, expensive, lightest metal we can get. At least, that's my opinion and-"
"Older sisters know best." Sammy droned, repeating the phrase Ashlynn was so fond of. "Iridium sounds cool."
Ashlynn grinned. "Good, because that's what I put on your supersuit." She picked up the suit and tossed it to her little brother. "Oh, and by the way, you should be more careful with your powers. I'm guessing the storm was your fault?"
Sammy blushed, glaring at his sister. "Bye. Thanks for the suit."
Ashlynn waved her hand. "Someone has to do the work in this house. See ya, kid." She turned to her desk, paused, then tossed a mask at Sammy's head.
Sammy left, heading towards his room to put on his new alter ego. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
