Your name is Sam, when James, the self proclaimed God had - what was the word to describe it? Ascended to Godhood the entire world was left in shock. As a journalist you had never experienced anything like it in your entire career, but now you had been invited? Appointed? Forced? To be in the audience that would witness the meeting between God and his human subjects.
You arrived at the building, this time you were no longer out of breath. It appeared that this being had improved your health, you had interviewed a few people whose limbs had grown back, whose cancer had disappeared. People who were stabbed or slashed but didn't even have a scratch on them. You even tried cutting yourself, with no effect on your body. All around the world similar things were reported as people walked out of hospitals, clinics and ICUs with whatever injury or illness completely wiped without a trace. Already this had shaken up the world as wars ground to a halt, combatants unable to even harm each other and ending proclamations about a possible economic upheaval caused by what appeared to be the obsolesce of medicine itself.
In many places farm animals suddenly found themselves outside of the farms they were held in. Chickens, cows, rats, sheep and many others escaped their pens, cages or labs. They didn't attack any of the humans or cause a nuisance, they simply moved themselves into the wilderness. Pets stayed with their owners in most cases, although in some other cases the animals escaped, often in cases where they had been abused.
Scientists registered other changes, particulates and atmospheric CO2 concentration had changed. Suddenly the climate and weather appeared to be stabilising. It really did seem that nature was healing itself.
Somewhat ominously though many world leaders had simply...disappeared. Most of them were dictators but even a few democratically elected officials simply vanished. Replacements were still being hastily sought, to gather at the command of...James. No-one knew what the consequences of defying his command would be, but some leaders had already proclaimed defiance publicly, that they would refuse to attend the meeting.
Like the many thousands you arrived at the UN Headquarters and hundreds were ushered into the General Assembly room, crowding the room almost to the point of overcapacity. No-one knew exactly where God would appear or if he would appear at all.
Then he appeared. You knew he appeared, the knowledge just appeared in your own mind, everyone in the room stood in rapt attention as James stood over the entire building, the roof disappearing as he towered over the structure as a living skyscraper of flesh and blood, a confident smile on his face as he looked down at his new subjects from his mile high vantage point. You looked up at his marvellously handsome physique, no man in the world could hope to match his physical perfection.
"Good morning to all of you. I am pleased that almost every world leader has heeded my summons. I trust that most of you are enjoying many of the new benefits I have brought to you all. I know for a fact that many of you are in far better health than you have ever been, that many of you have seen your loved ones able to walk, see or hear for the first time in years or even ever, many of you have enjoyed the clean air and oceans I have made for you. More benefits are on the way, this is only a taste of what you will see going forward. But now down to business - As I have previously stated I am the supreme ruler of the world. I am sovereign over all peoples and all nations everywhere and no-one is independent of me. As such this is how things will work from now on:
One: The current structure of nations, legal institutions, businesses and everything else will continue as normal unless I explicitly decide otherwise. You may continue to rule your nations under is present form of government as you and your people see fit. However I retain the absolute right and privilege to overrule or change any of your laws or your constitution or to ignore them entirely. I am the court of final appeal on any matter, large or small and I have the right to change my mind at any time for whatever reason I deem necessary to administer justice.
Two: You may advise me, petition me or give me counsel on any matter if i request it or if you wish to offer it. You may criticise me, insult me and complain about any policy of mine as publicly as you please. There will be total and complete freedom speech and the press in regards to me. Do note however that I am completely at liberty to ignore anything you say.
Three: If you disobey my commands you will be removed from your position of power and your respective government may appoint a replacement that will do as I command. If the government does not appoint a replacement that meets my standards I will appoint the replacement myself. The leaders that refused to show up today have now been dismissed from their posts effective immediately. They will also be temporarily imprisoned until their replacements have taken up their respective posts.
Four: It is important that you understand the distinction between a Command from your God and the Will of your God. A command means you must obey, under threat of punishment. My Will means that it will happen because I decided it that it to happen. I will demonstrate the difference right now so that it is all clear to everyone".
He paused, letting the crowd murmur amongst themselves before he stretched his arms out and smirked "Pledge your fealty to your God by kneeling before him. Every single person in this building I command to get on their knees. NOW!" His last word rattling the building and creating an earthquake. Immediately the hundreds in the room began to kneel, unwilling to find out how they would be punished. Yet there were those that did defy him, that refused to obey. You were one of them, you don't know why exactly you chose defiance, perhaps you wanted to demonstrate that no matter what threats he made or carried out if you disobeyed he could not get what he wanted from you. Perhaps you hoped, this might force him to compromise with humanity at some level.
All hopes of this were dashed as James spoke again "I see that some of you have chosen not to kneel before me, to defy my command. Perhaps you think I can be thwarted or resisted by your refusal to cooperate. Impossible. You WILL all kneel. I have decided that it is not possible to do otherwise!" he said, his words literally becoming true as you suddenly felt a compulsion to kneel. Your muscles moving on their own as you and all the others begun to kneel. He looked down on you all, the triumphant smirk on his face telling you all you needed to know: The will of humanity had been broken before this God. There was nothing that would stop him from doing as he alone willed. The fate of humanity, the future of the universe, everything revolved around what he wanted, probably forever if he chose. You could only hope that he would be as benevolent as he claimed to be and would remain so. Given how drunk on power he appeared to be this did not appear likely to you.
"I look forward to your continued cooperation. You may all rise now" God said as you got up from the ground. "Now that I have clarified the terms of my reign it is time for the next step. I suggest that all of the assembled journalists prepare themselves for my next order of business. Starting immediately I will begin the...".
