Chapter #3

A past mistake

*RING!* *RING!* *RING!*

"Oh for the love of god." spoke a very frustrated Catwoman. There were so many ways someone could contact Batman. The Bat Signal, The Bat Computer, The vid link in the Batmobile, you name it, but if there was one indication that he now had too many ways for contact, it was his cell phone. It was one thing when those things interrupted a movie or something, but to interrupt their romps was too much. The next chance Catwoman got, she was going to sit on that thing.

As equally upset as his feline lover, the caped crusader reached into his utility belt and pulled out the black phone that folded out into the vague shape of a bat. He the put that thing to his ear and said "Someone better be dying.....What?...."

Batman's eyes suddenly widened, and he dropped the phone. Catwoman became worried. Almost nothing shook her brooding husband, but the look in his eyes was one she had never seen before. She didn't even try to brush this aside by squishing him into her doughy body, only waited until he was ready to tell her the apparently horrible news

*Batcave*

Deep within the sanctuary and headquarters of the World's Greatest detective, a deathly silence had fallen upon the already creepingly still cave. Even the bats didn't make a sound, they just hung from the ceiling and stared at what transpired below. Beneath them, Batman and his love, Catwoman walked in, with matching somber expressions. They spoke not a word, only making their way to the medical table, where Batgirl was there waiting for them. Her eyes were ready to burst with tears as she stepped aside to reveal Robin, groaning achingly on the table.

Batman's shadow was soon cast on his teenaged ward, who forcefully opened his heavy eyes to see the man he saw as his father. His gloved hand reached out and was placed on Robin's forhead, causing Batman to let out a deep sigh as he shivered with sorrow. Somehow keeping his composure, he looked up to Batgirl and asked "What did this?"

"A toxin, introduced to his system months ago. It's too late to synthesize and antidote and he's...he's..." Batgirl broke out in tears as she was unable to say the words. Quickly Batman moved over to his blubbering sidekick, soon to be his only sidekick. Not even the way her costume clung her sumo like form could snap him out of his own sorrow, this was far too serious.

"How could this have happened?" Batman asked, his anger starting to rise up in his voice. Whoever the villain was who had somehow managed to escape the FJL feeding frenzies and poisoned Robin, would not escape the Dark Knight's wrath. However, he never expected for someone in the cave to speak up "It's my fault." Swinging around, he spotted a very guilt looking Catwoman, and Robin used what little strength he had to stare at her.

*Flashback*

The Scarecrow was fighting for his life just like every other criminal in Gotham and beyond. Jail was one thing, but spending who knows how long in pergatory until he was allowed to return to Earth, that didn't exactly sound appealing. Right now he was being bested Robin the boy wonder and Catwoman, who was looking at him like he was a mouse just begging to be swallowed. Fortunately, that fat cat was busy wolfing down his henchmen, or rather, people who he had sprayed with a special that made them feel like could confront any fear, including ingestion.

He swung his staff at Robin, who dodged every blow. The boy was strong, skilled, but he was young, and arrogant. He believed nobody could defeat the Fat Justice League, and therefore him. That became his down fall. As he leaped in to kick the villain, the Scarecrow pulled out a gun, that fired out one of his toxins.

The sudden shock of the gas coming at him broke Robin's focus, and he fell as the noxious cloud enveloped his body. He coughed and wheezed, but as soon as it cleared, he felt fine. The Scarecrow stumbled back, unable to figure out what went wrong. Did he leave this batch in the sun for too long or something? Well he never got answer because soon he backed up into something very round and squishy.

"Meow." was all Catwoman said before she snatched up her pray. Not wanting to waste time with a guy who's costume made him look like a corpse that had rotted on a noose, she opened her mouth as wide as she could, until her jaw reached past her giant jugs, and the Scarecrow could see every wet, and pink inch of the cavernous maw. It was the last thing he saw as she tossed him in, his whole body vanished, and she swallowed him whole in one gulp.

"Weird. His gas didn't seem to do anything to me." Robin said as he looked over himself. Catwoman didn't pay much mind to the boy who was practically her stepson, and just patted her even rounder and more bouncy belly. "Maybe you'd like to test my gas next?" she suggested. That got Robin to shut up...and got him a little curious.

*End Flashback*
