This choice: Turns out your going to be left alone with someone for a bit • Go Back...Chapter #4The Nobel, But Pretty Stupid Thing To Do by: chaos For the rest of the day you just lie silently on your bed and try to wrap your head around how messed up your life is right now. You don’t feel smaller; your clothes are a little bit looser but no more then if you lost a few pounds. It’s hard to imagine what it will be like when you really start shrinking. Will a bigger world be frightening or beautiful? Will people treat you the same or pity you? What will people say? How long do you have? Are you contagious? What are you going to wear?
“Honey, are you okay?” Your mom pops her head in, clearly concerned for you. Sighing you, sit up and rub your head. “Kind of got a migraine.” Your mom sympathetically looks at you and then asks you to come downstairs, there’s something important you have to discuss with the family. Groaning, you get out of bed and head downstairs, trying to force all the questions from your brain.
You take a seat at the dinning room table, your parents and sister seated across from you. Your sister looks pretty happy about the situation, probably imaging her big brother shrinking down to be absolutely hilarious. Honestly, you don’t see the humour. Your mom clears her throat and begins speaking to you in a calm, almost patronizing voice. “Peter, we’ve been talking to the doctors about your condition and since you’re the first recorded case of your kind they aren’t really sure how much time you have left. They think it’ll be a month before you lose more then a few inches every week, but they aren’t certain.”
You snort at that information, no one seems to know anything about what’s happening to you or can just guess. You certainly have no idea what’s going to happen and neither does anyone else, in all of human history this has never happened before. Only time will tell whether you're remaining time on Earth was going to be happy or a living nightmare.
“Since we aren’t sure how long until you start losing most of your height, your father and I are considering if its wise to postpone our business trip. It's only for two weeks, but we don’t want to leave you when you're facing a crisis like this. We both love you and only want what’s best for you.”
You sit up a little bit more strait in your seat as you get where your mom is going. Your parents run a small consulting firm that’s nearly bankrupt, the only way to save it is with this big presentation they planned to give in New York in the next few days. The plan was for them to leave you at home to look after your sister for two weeks and you were actually pretty excited about it, up until you learned you were becoming the incredible shrinking man, then you forgot all about your parents trip plans. Now that your parents reminded you your left in a small predicament, let them forget the trip, lose their business and possibly watch you drop a few inches or tell them to go and see how much height you drop before they get back. The doctors seemed to think you wouldn’t lose too much height at first, but do you really trust them.
“I want you to know Pete, that we are perfectly fine staying here and looking after you. We’ll be just fine whether we go to New York or not.”
And that settled it for you. One look at your mom’s bright, loving smile and you knew what the right thing to do was. “Mom, Dad, you guys go to New York. I’m certain I won’t lose any more of my height before you guys get back so you guys had better go.”
You try to sound certain even if you're not. Your parents buy it as they tell you how proud they are of you, your dad claps you on the shoulder, your mom is near tears, it’s a nice family moment until the only family member yet to say anything speaks up. “Don’t worry Pete, I’ll take good care of you while mom and dad are gone.”
“Actually honey, you won’t have to worry about Pete. You’ll be staying at your friends house while Pete stays with someone that can make sure he’s safe.” You let out a loud sigh of relief that earns you a nasty look from your little sister. Even if you only shrink a few inches then you know your sister is going to mock you and make your time miserable. Still you wonder who you’ll be staying with.
