Tripping over a twig, you decide that you'll pick out a victim for the wolf from nearest exhibit. You reach the gate at the perimeter of the wolf enclosure and deftly climb over it. A lit-up sign several metres away says "up ahead, Foxes". It'll have to do.
You fumble in the darkness with the master key, finally getting it into the lock, and silently enter the large metal grid enclosure. Underneath your shoes you feel the unmistakable texture of sand: quite apt considering it's the Fennec fox exhibit. As you close the squeaky gate behind you, a quiet rustling and tap tap tapping of footpads against sand moves towards you.
"Hello there!" a cheery voice greets you, "I don't think I've seen you here before. Are you a new zookeeper?" You take out your flashlight, shining it around for a few seconds before spotting the small sand-colored fox behind you.
"Um, oh, yes, in fact, I am a new zookeeper!" you're making this up as you go along, "And you there," you crouch down, "You're going to need to come with me."
The miniscule fox tilts his head, "Oh, but it's night though, didn't you notice?" inquisitively after a moment's pause he adds, "I- I don't think the zoo is supposed to open until morning." A puzzling look of confusion comes over the critter but then quickly alleviates "I could be wrong though!" he cheerfully adds with a smile and walks towards you.
You gently pick him up as you would a cat; the fennec yips in delight. He's a tiny thing, really. Very friendly as well; it really is a shame he's going to be someone's dinner soon, you think silently to yourself.
"Say, you never told me where we're going? Are you taking me to the vet? Oh," the fennec's large ears splay back in displeasure and he shudders, "I don't want to go to the vet!"
"Oh, don't worry," you close the door to the fennec enclosure behind you, locking it in place, "you're not going to the vet, you can trust me on that."
"My stars, what a relief! " the little fox breathes a happy sigh, "But then where are we going? You can tell meeeee~! Oh it's a surprise, isn't it?" he yips in delight and you feel even worse about what you know is going to happen, "I absolutely looove surprises! Is it going to be food? I bet it's food! Is it food I'll be getting?!"
You climb over the fence that surrounds the wolf enclosure again, more slowly and gently this time because of the fox you're carrying.
"Yes, foxie, food." you reassure him, petting him on the head, "You're going to be *mumble* food."
"Given food? Oh, spiffy! I bet it's going to be really delicious food for being so good, isn't it? That's why you only took me and left my brothers and parents right?"
Aww geez! He has family! you mutter under your breath. That's it, no way is this poor guy is becoming wolf food. You turn around abruptly, your morals getting the better of you—
"And where," the grey alpha wolf beckons as he emerges in front of you from the trees "do you think you're going?"
You remain silent. The fennec in your arms barks an excited greeting. The wolf comes up to you, sniffing the fox.
"Small," the wolf pauses a moment and considers, "...but, a good appetizer. You did alright human."
"There's going to be appetizers too? Oh boy! You were invited to the meal too, huh wolf, weren't you? Pleasure to meet you!" the fennec wags his tail and cheerily pricks his ears. The wolf cocks an eyebrow. You...
