You do the swap with him and go back to Carson's house after school. His great aunt is there, and she is a terror. Blunt, demanding, hyper-critical of both Carson and his mother; she drops casual insults while still expecting to be honored as family. You've never close to Carson's mom, but you find yourself bonding with her under the experience.
Once Great Aunt Tilda has left, you bolt back for your house. You have to pretend to be Carson when you get there, and are surprised when your mother tells you that James is not home. "I think he went over to Swensons," she says.
Swensons is an ice cream shop, and a place for casual dating. You wonder what would take him there.
You get your answer when you drive up, and see him sitting at a table with Kelly Clark. She's a red-head you know from way back, pretty in her way, but not your type. You've had the suspicion for awhile that she has a crush on you. And Carson has dropped hints in the past that he likes her.
So it shouldn't be a surprise when you see him pressing his mouth—your mouth—against hers in a lingering kiss. And yet you're gobsmacked.
