"Well, I don't have much of a choice," you say disdainfully,"I'll watch your eggs for you." Good choice, for both of us. Mayla turned to the other dragons. These two are my sisters. The blue-green one is Shura and the red one is Taklu. "Nice to meet you, Shura and Taklu." Taklu grunted in irratation and flew out of the cave. "Did I do something wrong?" No, dear, Taklu is always grumpy, a new, soft voice cooed. Shura was looking at you curiously. Her eyes sparkled as she came in close to look you over. I've never seen a human up so close, at least not one I wasn't killing. You start to sweat. No worries, dear, your safe. Besides being Mayla's egg-sitter, I only kill humans you get too close to my nest or see me. I can't have them going out to tell their friends there's a dragon in the forest. "That's kind of harsh, isn't it?" Now Mayla spoke. Maybe it is, but secrecy is our best defense. You should know, humans respond to the unknown with violence and destruction. We'd be driven to extinction. You nod in reluctant agreement. Well, I'm feeling that pang in my gut. I saw a herd of white-tailed deer near my lake, and I should get them before they move on. Goodbye sister, goodbye Kim. Shura dove backwards out of the cave and twisted into flying position.
Show off, Mayla snorted, a small puff of smoke escaping her nostrils. Mayla turned her attention to Kim. I'm going to teach you about how to care for my eggs. "Okay then," you reply. You follow her to a room attached to what would be her bedroom. In it was a much smaller, but deeper depression, as well as lot's of "Wood?," you ask. Yes, wood. As you probably know, eggs have to be kept warm. Dragon eggs are no exception, but they have to be kept exremely warm. The wood is fuel for fire. "We have to cook the eggs?," Mayla snorted. In a way. the fire will burn over and around the eggs to keep them nice and hot while they incubate. You just need to keep the fire burning while I'm gone. "That reminds me, I have a question" Yes? "Well, why do you need me at all? I'm sure you or your sisters could place wood on the fire as well as I can. Mayla hung her head slightly. Normally, dragons care for there young as a pair. One hunts while the other tends to the eggs, or young when they hatch, and they take turns doing each. But my mate left me. Mayla roared and whipped the cave wall with her tail. He abandoned his family, his mate for 24 years, for some new fling! Mayla pounded the ground, making the cave shake. You fall on the ground and curl into a defensice ball. The shuddering stops. You look up to find Mayla curled up like a cat on the floor. Her body shakes rythmically. You realize with a shock she is crying. You come around to her head and stroke the ridge above her eyes. She looks at you with light grey eyes sparkling with unshed tears. Thank you, Kim. I think I'm going to like having you around.
