Chapter #3

Becoming a Giant

    by: rockstatic Author IconMail Icon
You sit on a bench outside of the train station, idly turning the gun around in your hands. (It doesn't look much like a real gun, so even if anyone's looking at you, they're probably not too alarmed.) You look around at all the people walking down the street, entering and leaving the train station, and you wonder what it'd feel like to have them all under your feet for a while. You smile to yourself, looking at all those people with the knowledge that any minute they'll all be running for their lives.

But anyway, enough time sitting around. You stand up, take a few uncertain steps, and check the gun to make sure it's on "grow." You take a deep breath, close your eyes and fire.

What's amazing is the screams from passersby are the first thing you notice, but even then they seem to be falling down lower and lower to the ground. You open your eyes and see the buildings become shorter and shorter. Soon you grow even taller than the buildings around you, and as you rise over their roofs you realize you can see for miles and miles in any direction. It's an amazing sight, but not as incredible as watching the horizon recede behind you. It's an intoxicating feeling to know that you're seeing all that while your feet are standing on the ground. With that thought, though, you snap back to reality. You stop growing and take a look around.

You realize it was a good thing you decided to do this in the little park outside the train station as opposed to any random street, because you're so gigantic you'd probably have gotten squeezed against the buildings on half the streets in the city. As it is, though, you're about twice as tall as the buildings in your area and slightly shorter than the two or three biggest skyscrapers in the middle of downtown. You look down at your feet in hopes of seeing a screaming throng of people, but most people seem to have gotten out of your immediate vicinity in the minute or so since you've started growing. People a few blocks away, though, are still fleeing, and you can see them clearly.

You decide to try out being a giant. You're standing on a concrete area in front of the train station, and you lift your foot high in the air and slam it down on the ground as hard as you can. You discover to your delight that you actually do smash through the concrete and leave a giant footprint in the ground, but better yet, your giant foot has created an earthquake that has knocked over most of the crowd running away from you a few blocks away. That is really cool. You do it again, and the rest of the people fall down too. You can't help but laugh, even though you wonder if anyone was seriously hurt. Probably not.

Next you look down and discover you're standing near a few parked cars. You reach down and pick one up, amazed at how light it is. It's basically a matchbox car to you now. No one seems to be in it, which is a shame, since you were kind of hoping someone was hiding out in there. With nothing else to do with it, you decide to see how far you can throw it. You wind up and fire, easily clearing all obstacles in your way, and you watch the car sail off into the distance. Of course, you have no idea how to mark any distances at this height, so you mostly just marvel at how much it's heading over. It must be in the next county by the time it lands, which, unfortunately, does not cause a big explosion. Maybe next time.

The buildings in the area, while fairly tall, really only go up to your waist. You wonder how strong they really are. You're big, but they're still concrete. So in the name of science, you reach down and grab the corner of one of the taller buildings near you. With your fingers on the right side and your thumb on the front, you press your thumb against the building to see what happens. Presto! Without too much effort, you smash through the concrete and bash up what looks like someone's apartment. Nice! Apparently breaking buildings wouldn't be too hard after all. For good measure, you punch another building and wreck what must be two or three floors. That felt good.

You decide to walk to the part of downtown with all the tallest skyscrapers, the ones even taller than you. It takes you about half a minute to get there, as your stride takes you over a city block with each step. Unfortunately, about as soon as you come face to face with a giant concrete building, you realize you hadn't even thought about what you were stepping on as you strode down the streets. You stuck to the main roads, as they're the widest, but those are also the roads where there were probably the most people. Unless, of course, they got out of the way in time once they knew you were coming. You think about it. That's probably what happened.

Looking around at your new surroundings, you notice there are actually people standing on the roof of one of the nearby buildings about half a block away from you. You understand that you're quite a sight at your new size, but you're still surprised they're not fleeing in terror. You briefly think about slamming your fist into the roof to teach them, but decide against it. Instead, you squint at the building in front of you. There are countless windows in your field of vision, and you're stunned to see there are people at a few of those windows looking at you. They must be crazy. You reach back for the punch of your life, throw your arm forward, and stop with your fist right up against the building. You laugh. That must have given some people some heart attacks.

Next you walk over to another tall building, this one with an outside made entirely of glass. You always liked the neat reflections in those buildings, but that still doesn't prepare you for seeing a dim reflection of yourself in the setting sun. It's a weird feeling. You wonder again how tough these walls would be to break. You run your fingers down the side of this glass building, and it almost melts away in your hands. Although you really just touched the edge of about ten floors, you watch as desks, chairs, computers and loose papers fall out of the sky to the ground below. You look down to see them land and notice that there are actually a few people standing around directly under you. A lot of daredevils in this city.
