Nick hopes that the jock coming up the stairs is one that he knows is decently kind to him in the past. Thus if there is contact (if it were possible), he can get some help.

Sure enough the jock gets closer and closer to the dust-sized Nick. Nick notices it is what he hoped...or didn't hope for.
