Nick makes his way on the spongy surface towards Rob's big toe. It may take longer to climb, but from where he was standing earlier; the ridges of skin are visible. Plus, there's no time to be picky. Rob would be finishing his dump soon and once he moves, it'll be hard for him to stand and easier for him to get smashed by the oblivious giant. He grabs the lowest ridge like the rung of a ladder. The surface feels thick to the touch, maybe the result of a callus that grew the longer Rob kept his dogs in his football cleats. Nick reaches for the next ridge, grabs hold, and hoists himself further up the toe.
Eventually the ridges of skin grow thinner as it curls inwards past an impressive ridged canopy. He must have reached the top of Rob's toe, thinks Nick, but right below his toenail. Here the toe skin sinks inwards where the nail grows out. His arms and legs ache from the climb and after checking above him, quite a bit of nail has grown past the edge of the toe. Between the two, there would be enough space for Nick if he crawls along his belly. He slides inside the gap, which appears like a maze of skin. The air-filled gaps provide a strange fleshy cave that no spelunker has ever ventured until now.
