Dr. Marsden Chats with the Captain

by: Phelina Hemtrop Author IconMail Icon
It would be good to speak to the captain first before breakfast and the meeting in the dining hall. Heading to the captain's cabin, he knocked and was admitted.

"Captain, I thought you would like to hear the results of my examination of the body as well as other evidence I have discovered." The captain nodded tiredly. In private, the murder had taken its toll on the captain. He was not a man to rest peacefully with a killer onboard his ship.

After explaining the state of the body and his inferences, Dr. Marsden moved onto the evidence of the knife. "There is a chance that the murderer had kept the knife hoping to replace it afterwards without me noticing. And yet the murderer must have expected us to look as soon as I saw the stab wound. It was probably thrown into the sea over the edge of the ship."

"Still, it might be good to have a search of the rooms. Perhaps we could also look for bloody linens in case the murderer had gotten blood on his clothes, or cleaned up afterwards with a cloth. These would be more incriminating if found, and if thrown overboard they would float unless weighted in some way. But then the weight and the clothes or cloth might be noticed to be missing."

"I will have a few trusted men from the crew search the entire ship while the passengers are at breakfast. I know the crew can be excluded. They were all down in the ship sleeping, and none could get past my room without me waking. I can pick a few men from among them to check the ship for the knife and any bloody cloths."
