Phillip Marsden MD, was the ship's doctor. He sat in his cabin at his desk reading the notes that he'd made from an examination of the boy's body before it had been taken down to the hold. In circumstances like this, the doctor became the detective.
Though not a coroner and just a simple GP, he'd had experience in treating all kinds of wounds. He pulled his notebook closer; his fountain-pen wavering over the dot-points he had in front of him.
The boy had been attacked from behind. Bruising around the neck suggested stranglation. Daniel Carver's fingers and nails were covered with blood. Possibly, he had reached back and had tried to claw his attacker off him.
The doctor read over his notes on the stab-wound. It had been one wound; to the left of the chest, around the area of the heart. It would've caused near instant death and severe blood-loss. The knife would need to be very sharp, to penetrate the boy's clothing, his skin and then the heart itself. An attacker could easily smuggle a table-knife out of the dining-room, but that was too blunt. The doctor paced the room...then, he noticed it.
Lying on the floor was a button. It wasn't one that he recognised. He picked it up and put it into his desk-drawer and locked it. Opening his medical kit, the doctor sorted through them...
Among his posessions needed for performing emergency surgery onboard ship, was a set of surgeon's knives. Marsden opened the box and noticed at once that a long knife, with a six-inch blade, used to cutting open bodies to examine their insides...was missing...

Mrs. Carver cried. Stephen tried to comfort her.
"It's alright!" he said, "They'll find the murderer, you'll see...this is a ship. There's only so many places he can hide!"
"I hope you're right, Stephen," said the lady. "I...I think I need a nap..."
"Alright," said Stephen. He got up and left the cabin, turning off the lights in the process.
