“Why do you say that, honey?” asked Susan, wondering why Greg brought up such an odd question. “I’ve had a few little snacks today, but no more than usual” said Susan straight-faced. She knew that she liked to eat, but really didn’t notice just how much she was putting away these days. On top of that, for a woman of her age, it was natural.
“Well, sweetie...it’s just....er....you’ve put on a tiny little bit of weight lately” mumbled Greg, faltering under Susan’s gaze. “And...uh...I wondered if you thought it might have anything to do with your...um...overeating?” Greg trailed off, his voice getting quieter towards the end.
“I can’t believe you’re telling me I’m too fat!” said Susan angrily, raising her voice, “I have a little evening snack and you accuse me of overeating!” Susan was outraged, and totally forgot that she’d only five minutes ago eaten an entire apple pie covered in cream. “It’s not like I have a weight problem – I just like a little treat every so often to see me through the day! Bringing up three kids is stressful work – but you wouldn’t know since I do everything around here!” cried Susan, getting really worked up.
“But honey, think of your health!” said Greg desperately.
“Ha, I’m as fit and healthy as the days when I was on the college athletics squad!” said Susan, defiantly placing her hands on her soft hips and remaining oblivious to her numerous bulges and rolls. Arching his eyebrows, Greg couldn’t believe the level of denial Susan had to be in to believe this.
“Come on sugar, you couldn’t do any of your old sports now – you’re way too out of shape!” said Grey, incredulous that Susan seemed to be oblivious to her huge weight gain.
“I could too! I just don’t want to, that’s all!” snapped Susan, stamping her foot and causing her flabby body to jiggle.
“All I’m asking is that you try to cut back on food a bit. If you really don’t have a problem, then that shouldn’t be so hard should it?” he said.
“Uh....no, of course it won’t be hard. I can eat as little as I like!” said Susan, annoyed to be trapped into restricting her snacking.
“That’s the spirit honey – I’m just thinking of your welfare that’s all. Eating a little less will do you good!” said Greg enthusiastically.
“I’ll show you I don’t have a problem – I’ll eat no snacks tomorrow at all! Will that make you happy?!” said Susan angrily.
“Sure will honey. You just tell me honestly tomorrow night that you’ve had no snacks and I’ll be happy.”
“Right, I will!” Susan said crossly, and waddled over to get into bed.
Rolling onto her side, Susan ignored Greg and tried to sleep. But all the arguing had made her feel wide awake again. Shifting her bulk around restlessly, Susan realized that her belly was rumbling softly and she felt a little hungry. ‘Stupid Greg, telling me I overeat!’ thought Susan, mad at her husband for trying to stop her snacking. ‘If he wasn’t watching me now, I’d go and get a nice little treat right now!’ Thinking wistfully of all the delicious foods she’d like to eat right now, Susan eventually fell asleep, dreading tomorrow when she’d have to go without her usual daily routine of constant snacking. ‘Mmm, I’ll show him I don’t overeat’ thought Susan as she drifted off to sleep.
