To make maters even worse it was Joanna’s best friend, Sally. She walked right in and sat down in the other pod and said “Jo I’ve been looking for you everywhere-OH MY GOD are these like those stereo chairs from the 70’- they are so retro. How do you turn it on? I can’t believe you’ve been holding out on me and I’m like your best friend. Were supposed to share everything remember…?
Despite the gravity of the situation, I was struck by how grown up my sister and her friend looked. They had been friends forever. I had always thought of them as little girls and here they were both dressed in tight shorts and halter-tops. I wondered if they had any idea how provocative they looked. They were totally ignoring me, which was a good thing because I needed time to figure out how to get them out of the pods without answering too many questions.
I told them firmly that the stereo was broken and they needed to get out of the “chairs” now. They both looked up at me as if surprised to see me. Sally said “Oh its just your dumb brother.” Johanna said, “He just doesn’t want us to listen to it.” And before I could stop them they put the helmets on their heads and pushed the big red button. The lights on the machine flashed and everything was the same – but different.
