Hmmm. This might be difficult to explain. Just today I noticed that on the Shywriter folder I promised to include disclaimers in the event of nonconsensual scenes and such, and I had not done that, so I'm doing that now with my "Ameni Chronicles" series. The thing is...in this series it's difficult to decide, really, what counts as "nonconsensual." For those who haven't checked it out, the story is a fantasy "anthro" (furry)-type story set in ancient Egypt and the characters involved are of this mythical race I made up myself. In this society, females and slaves (to simplfy, those who cannot fly) possess next-to-no rights, and are considered property of the flying caste. As such there are lots of scenes of the warriors having sex with their slaves, male and female. And some of these relations are what one would definitely consider nonconsensual. The thing is...in this society, there really is no such thing as "rape" when it comes to having sex with one's own slaves--slaves and females don't have the right to protest if they don't want to. In fact, THEY may be punished for refusing to obey. So rape has a very different definition in this society, and doesn't apply nearly as often. According to these guys, remember. I've decided that in scenes when there are nonconsensual relations between characters not involved in a master/slave relationship, that should count as rape, as someone who is not the master doesn't have that right unless granted it by the master himself; and of course in scenes when the characters involved are not slaves, the "rape" warning will apply also. But, in scenes when one of the masters is basically forcing his slaves to have sex with him, whether they fight or not (they usually don't, but that doesn't mean they enjoy it), I'm not sure WHAT that should be called. I would call it nonconsensual, and I'm willing to bet anyone else here would too, but remember that in this society, it's considered the master's right to do this. Although by OUR society's moral standards it's the same thing as rape, by these guys' standards, it's not. And thus I feel it doesn't stand on quite the same footing as the other nonconsensual scenes in the story. Hope that made sense. Although like I said, we would all agree the scenes are nonconsensual, should they be marked with a warning as such? When it's typical behavior and not considered a crime to have sex with an unwilling slave, should I include the same type of disclaimer as on the other scenes where the rape IS considered a crime? If you say that yes, I should still include the disclaimer, then answer me this too: It's also typical behavior for unwilling slaves to ACT as if they are enjoying themselves, just to keep their masters happy. When in truth they are often scared out of their minds and not enjoying themselves at all. And so even *I'm* not always sure when there's force involved or not. What would I do concerning disclaimers then? I can't assume that EVERY master/slave relationship implies rape, since some of the slaves really do enjoy themselves. And some fight back, and some just pretend to like it. Some even enjoy it AND fight back. GAH!! Oy, I have really stepped in this one.
