Why should I be able to get down to the post office within a week? This is the process: Monday: I: "Stevie, I need to go the post office. Put it on the list, will you?" Stevie: "Just because I'm the frickin' household manager this month doesn't mean I can do seventeen things at once... What did you say? Tuesday's full. What about Wednesday. No, wait, Sarah went and scheduled my class's exam for Wednesday. Thursday? And that has to be before five, right?" I: "Of course. In all the twelve years that we've lived here, the post office has always closed at five." Cherie: "I know it's Stevie's chore to do the driving-around-town stuff, but maybe Rachel could take Elizabeth down on Tuesday if they're willing to take the library books with them." Rachel: "Would that mean I'd have to get out of bed before four-thirty?" I: "Of course. In all the twelve years that we've lived here--" Jimmy: "Why don't you walk down? That's environmental." I: "You can take your skinny ass and stick it you-know-where. I don't care to walk two miles in the heat with a cardboard box stuck under my arm." Cherie: "If Stevie can give you cash, you could drop off the library books, do your thing at the post office, and get home before six in time to do some gardening before dark." I: "Cherie, don't feel obliged to organize our frickin' lives. I can figure it out. I'm not really in a rush; it can wait until Friday." Stevie: "Let's plan on Friday."
