About my Mum working in the hospital!: I talked to mum for a long time after reading Yana's post about being a nurse, and I found out that she was actually a nurse's assistant, but took over when the nurses were handling extreme cases. She went to a special school for about 8 months and had to take psychology and other classes to prepare her for hospital work, and after that she was a trainee at a hospital for three months. Then she was good to go and worked graveyard shift at Standford University's hospital. I didn't know that she had worked there! Very neat. Have you heard of Stanford? She saw a lot of the same things that Yana told us about. Sometimes she had to stay all night with suicidals who had to be tied down, and sometimes she had to press a button for help when patients got violent and rowdy. She only witnessed one person's death, a 14-year old boy, which was about when she realized the toll the job was taking on her mental stability and happiness. She said that she got to hold lots and lots of newborns, though, and give them bottles, since (incredulously) in those days (the 70s) most women didn't nurse their babies themselves! That's the story! hanging in the doorway like smoke like mistletoe this is where i'll be whenever you come or go |
