New years. Well, the eve was good. Sort of mellow, like yours. We had a bonfire but didn't sit around it for that long -- just stood singing calm happy songs until it was midnight. Franny was upset because she and Mike (her not-boyfriend) had had a fight, so Emma and I put our arms around her shoulders and sang songs. Shayna was in the house with Mike and they only came down minutes before midnight. At twelve we all ran around hugging each other and I think Ryland twirled me off my feet, which I think made Rachel snort (she hates people to pick her up, but I don't mind at all). Then we all wandered back up the house, because it was cold down there (and I was in wool head to toe, and was still cold). Franny and Mike stayed down at the bonfire to talk. Up in the kitchen, we drank champagne (erk, okay, it was bubbly fruit stuff really) and ate cookies and peanuts and just sort of hung. I worried about Blake eating too many cookies, because he's diabetic, but I didn't mention it. Emmet (Franny's sister) and Fiona wanted to gossip about Franny and Mike but they didn't know the details. I did know some of the "dirt" -- Franny had confided in me the night we arrived, while it was just my family and hers in the house, in exchange for me spilling my guts about Ruth to her -- but I held my tongue. Aren't I mature?! I don't remember much more about the evening. I don't really want to write about new year's day. It's still weird to think about. I still don't know all the details. The thing is, Blake went into a diabetic coma sometime during the night, had a seizure in the morning, and had to be taken in an abulence to the hospital. He's okay. He's fine. But it was a weird thing to happen, and it was weird to see how everyone reacted, and it's sort of hard to process. I've never seen anyone in a seizure. The image of his purple lips and still, tense body are haunting me. I can't forget how Shayna, his sister, pulled his head back and tried to shove a cookie between his motionless lips. It crumbled all over the floor. I'll never forget how Fiona, Rachel, and Mike (our resident medical gurus) took charge until the EMRs and ambulence arrived. I'll never forget sitting very still with Puck, at the bottom of the stairs, feeling ourselves communicating without words. I'll never forget Robbi going with Shayna to the hospital. It's weird. Except for Yana, have any of you been at the scene of a really bad medical emergency? I hadn't before. I think it'll take time to sit in my mind and process.
