Pita needed to think. Things were happening too fast. The murderer had to be someone present, had to be logic said, but whom? Who else could selectively choose their target? Or, maybe one glass was poisoned, maybe smeared on the rim of the crystal, and it was just chance that chose the victim?

In his mind, he replayed the events leading up to Maryann 's sudden and brutal death. Mayhap she had vexed another guest?

He remembered she spoken to Lady Sarinja with the Jester, Boom Boom, Lady Incognito, Lord Aster, Lady Rayne Bowe, Lady Starlight, and Marie Antoinette. How could that cheery woman have triggered the events that caused her death? She had taken her time to study the others, but never approached them. Could her killer have been among those she never sought out to speak with?

A more frightening thought was that there was no real connection between the killer and victim, that it was utterly random.
