I've noticed a troublesome tick in the Blog system. When I write a response to another member's comment of my blog, I get the following error message.

Error.

Oops, Writing.Com had the following problem(s):
An item ID # was not included when requesting this page.
For further assistance, please visit our "Technical Support Forum" and post with a detailed explanation the problem you are having. Copying and pasting both the error message above and the URL of this page will help us help you. Error ID: #53350897

And I'm not allowed to return to the original comment, thus losing my answer.

Anyone else having this trouble?

I like to preview my blog messages before submitting them. I get the same blog error as you do, Jace, but only when I Preview it. Then I lose the text. So now I highlight and copy my messages before sending...just in case, but no longer preview my blog texts.

Greets,

Ok, just so I can be clear... Is this happening for you posting any comment to a blog? Because I don't think the blog system allows you to reply specifically to another comment. I believe it's just a "Comment" option. I just want to be sure we're both looking at the same thing...

I'm not able to duplicate the error posting a comment to a blog -- my own or another member's -- so I just need to see if we can narrow down the specific case or cases where this occurs.

Does this problem only occur when commenting on your ownn blog or is it a comment on any blog?

Does it occur "after" another action? For example, if you go to your blog and post a comment, does the error occur? Or does the error occur only AFTER another action on the blog. IE; you post a new blog entry and then if you comment immediately, that's when it occurs? Or you can't comment at all on your blog entries without the error?

Thanks,
~~SM

Hmmm... I just tested a preview of a blog comment and I didn't get the error.

It seems there's definitely some sequence of events that leads to this... I just need to figure out what that sequence is. *Smile*

The last time I tried it was yesterday. I just tried it again and it worked just fine. *Smile*

Yeah, it's definitely an artifact of "previous actions"... Meaning it happens only after you've done "something else" first. Just commenting on a blog, as a stand alone action, works correctly.

The error is triggered because of the way the comment section gets loaded AFTER something else has been done... which I can definitely fix, I just need to figure out what chain events gets to that point.

This will be a bit long--trying to provide each step I took from the start:

1. I wrote and posted my latest Blog entry, "A Member Leaves ... an OpeningOpen in new Window..

2. I received a comment via email from Jellyfish. In that email was a link in the lower left corner of the email:
Click here to view your Blog's
                   comments!

I clicked on that link, which opened a window entitled Leave a Comment. This window included a copy of my Blog entry, Jenny's comment, and an empty box with the attribute icons above it.

3. I wrote my comment in that box using the attributes I usually use (Verdana and 3.5).

4. Then I clicked on the Preview button below the box, which displayed the Error message.

5. Seeing no other way to get back to my previous screen (Leave a Comment), I hit the Edge Command line back arrow, which returned me to the email (losing my comment).

Update: I tried these same steps to answer Annette's comment, resulting in the same series of events cited above.

I hope this is enough for a diagnosis, The StoryMaster. I can't think of anything to add.

Edit: I was able to post a Public comment by by-passing the Preview button.

To answer your specific questions:

I believe it's just a "Comment" option. Yes, that is how my Blog is displayed.

Does this problem only occur when commenting on your ownn blog or is it a comment on any blog? I tried using the Preview button on another member's Blog, and it displayed properly. But I was the only comment in that case.

Does it occur "after" another action? Note my previous post for the order in which I completed my steps.

For example, if you go to your blog and post a comment, does the error occur? The Error only happens when using the Preview button.

Or you can't comment at all on your blog entries without the error? I am able to comment properly by using the Public Comment button, just not the Preview button. And I've never had occasion to post a comment immediately on my own Blog.

I hope this helps.

Ok … is it only when you click the link from the email?

… Or any time?

It sounds like the email link generates a page that doesn’t have everything it needs… or maybe it’s just happening from the view of a single blog post rather than the full blog view.

Edit to add: just to be clear I’ve been trying the preview and post and it’s working without issue. So it’s not just previewing the comment because I can’t get that to fail. It’s something that’s leading up to it.

It seems to be only when I respond to an email and use the Preview Comment link. I just tried using the Comment section on a different personal Blog post (no emails involved) using the Preview Comment, and the Preview worked perfectly.

Oh……
Is there a blog comment preview link in the email?

No. Not a Preview Comment link.

It's a separate link at the bottom of the email in a reddish color:

Click here to view your Blog's comments! Clicking on it normally takes me to a Leave a Comment window in which my Blog and any member comments are displayed. That is where I've tried to leave my own comment. Using the Preview Comment button doesn't work; Submit Public Comment works

So submitting a private comment is the only way to generate the error? Just trying to narrow down what causes the problem.

If I’m following, it seems like you’re testing says it’s only private comments … after a preview?

No Sir ... and I apologize if I inadvertently used Private. If I did, it was supposed to be PREVIEW. I have never tried to submit a Private comment, only public.

But the problem seems to exist when I've written the comment in the window and clicked on the Preview button to make sure my spelling and attributes are correct. Pressing PREVIEW sends me o
the ERROR message

Ok... the final summary on this:

It was an issue with the link that was included in the new blog comment notification email. It was using a pop-up system that it really had no business using. *Smile*

To fix the problem, I switched the link to what it should be. While I was in there, cleaned up the format of the email itself. In addition, blog comment email subject lines now include the title of the entry that the comment was place on. (Or some of it -- it truncates at about 30ish characters.)

Thank you, SM. Sounds like a clean fix. Appreciate your tenacity.
