I believe it depends on the items. Certain items (such as Groups, Message Forums and Static Items, to name a few) must be transferred to another member before the original host leaves.

I'm not sure about commissioned items such as Merit Badges and Awardicons. Perhaps they are exempted from disappearing. I'm pretty sure this is a question for Staff. The StoryMaster?
