I have been thinking about positive news stories and how many people at least say they want to see more of them. This has me wondering what people mean when they say they want positive news stories. After all, there are different types.

This is where you come in. I'm curious which of the below positive news examples you would want to read more about and why.

Story A: When confronted with a broken elevator, a middle aged man wastes no time getting his wheelchair bound teen son on his back and begins ascending the three flights of stairs.

Story B: City transit officials announce plans to fix all elevators and install new remote monitoring measures to identify elevator maintenance needs before breakdowns occur.

Feel free to share (all) your thoughts on this pair of scenarios. I really do want to know what you think.

I prefer the second. The problem I have found with the "personal" stories is that around 50% of the time later on there is something dark that the news media feels they need to share to dump on the good news.

I like good news where a scientist finds a new vaccine, an astronomer has found new planets or moons, animal refuges have been set up, some anonymous person has fixed something, a group of people have come together to make a change...

I used to see sport as good news, even when my team lost, but considering the behaviours of too many sports people, even that has lost its lustre.

I catch up on news 2, maybe 3, times a week. Negativity - and it seems it is all negative - is doing my mental health in.

You make and fair point about the "personal" stories. Half the time, I feel like the dark elements of those stories are hinted at in the original piece. Some people have raised that point in the past, but it continues to get overlooked.

I do think that the negativity in news is there but skewed by our brains. After all, we humans do harbor negativity biases and give the bad news more weight. We even physically respond to negative news stories more, and that could result in us even seeking them out. Of course, many news outlets of all stripes know how to take advantage of this. Thus, we as news readers have to consciously pay more attention to what we're reading and how often. I might be covering this in my YouTube blog soon.

Negativity sells (some political and religious leaders and fake-media (think National Enquirer) revel in the ka-ching). Fear, outrage and hate-mongering are well-known money-makers.

A is cute and, if true, shows others that there is hope and resilience.

B is not cute but shows foresight and competence.

I think many prefer A to B as B costs and A supports the idea that civil government with regulations is unnecessary.

In an Anti-vax world, with plenty of bread and circuses, A wins.

I completely agree with this!

While Story A is a feel-good story, and Story B is positive in letting us know the city is doing their job, I enjoy hearing about interesting discoveries.

B is Positive news. A is actually Negative news because no one should have to carry their son up the stairs. It would have been Positive news if there were people there to do that or have some other arrangements for people to get up and down.

I agree with S 🤦 and Cubby on I like good news where . . .

Positive news is when something is being done to benefit or help others or the public.

I totally get why you say A is actually negative news. It's rather strange how so many people think A is good news. I don't entirely get how that attitude develops.

I would go further, and say A is negative for the wheelchair-bound boy, then getting worse because of the broken elevator, then getting worse still for his father having to carry him (and presumably his wheelchair too). Every aspect of this story is tragic, even the father's heroic deed.
