And There It Was “Violet!” Mum called, “You need your coat today!” “It’s warm out!” Violet snapped back, “The temp thing says it’s warm!” “Yes, it’s warm-ish, but it’s also very windy out there.” “Why do I need a coat if it’s just windy? Is the wind cold?” “I don’t think so, but it’s strong. Your coat will protect you from anything the wind blows your way. Remember when you got bonked with that bag of trash?” “I was four! I think I can handle wind now…” “Well, I can’t, and I’m still your boss, so go get your coat and do not leave the house without it!” Knowing that was the last straw, Violet went and grabbed her coat. However, she did not actually put it on… She was sure she was right! The temperature was warm, the sun was out. She would certainly leave the house with the coat; she just didn’t want to put it on. It was the first warm day in a long stretch of cool temperatures and rain. She wanted to feel that sunshine on her arms. Ten minutes later Mom came out, her first words; “I told you to wear your coat! Where is it? You can’t just make all you own decisions yet, you’re only five. I am still your boss! Why didn’t you wear your coat? “I did bring it! I just wanted to feel the sun on my arms before I had to put it on!” “So why is it not out here and not on?” “Well, it is out here…” Violet said, quietly. “You left it someplace?” Mom asked. “No, I had it in my hand and the wind took it!” “The wind… the wind took it…Well where did the wind put it?” Violet pointed up to the roof… and there it was. |
