It's Christmas (well, the end of it, anyways), so expect replies to be slow. Anyways, I'll admit I'm one of the guys who voted for snatching Caleb's mom, if only because there's little to be known about her or Caleb in the first place, and because Mrs. Johansson has always been described as rather plain, so having Will replace her (former) best friend's mother feels a lot different from snatching, say, Kelly Cooper or Betty Vredenburg, who are often considered attractive. Getting some backstory about Caleb is a plus, particularly that story about his dad - and with Will hellbent on revenge, having an unexpected motive (Sarah fearing that Caleb ends up like his father) to follow it feels like the strangest stroke of luck. Now, how does Will take this? Especially since that means Mrs. Johansson will be one of the brethren of the Brotherhood, which means Will's gonna go wild with her. I'm half-inclined to think Will's gonna force Sydney into Caleb once his reputation is destroyed just for some extra fuckery. As for the line - more than the morality warp, it's the gymnastics to justify it. It's a representation of how most evil people don't think of themselves as evil, and how they blame "the other" to justify why they're doing things. "It's not oppression - it's to protect you from the other." And when the other is exterminated, then someone else has to be the other. Thus, Will is the "good" guy because Caleb is the "other" that has caused the grievance - and when Caleb's gone, someone else will become the other. Though, the warping of the Brotherhood takes you away from "responding to grievances" and more about hedonism, so he'll soon abandon that idea. Which, in and out of itself, is interesting. Shall we see Will tempted by the hedonism that comes from experiencing power, or will his penchant for revenge change things? |
