"Never fight a battle that you don't have to win." ~ Admiral Ardak Kumerian, Klingon Empire. Over the past nearly four decades those ten words have saved me more grief, stress, and blood pressure spikes than all other causes combined. Obviously, a Star Trek reference, but not from what you would consider a primary source, i.e., any of the shows or movies. In 1986, Task Force Games published Federation and Empire, a grand-strategic board game depicting border skirmishes and major conflicts between all the races in the Alpha Quadrant, Romulans, Klingons, Gorn, Klizinti, Tholians, and a half-dozen other races I've forgotten over the years. I snapped it up the moment I saw it. It was a beast to learn, its rulebook consisting of what was essentially a 64-page magazine with three columns of print per page. One of the columns (several actually) ran a bit short, leaving what would have been an awkward gap at the bottom, and to fill the space, one of the design team made up quotes from various figures from the races and used them to fill those gaps.
