Why cast the info in this way? To preserve a gauziness around it all. Any info in the "From Wikipedia" pages is exactly as reputable as it would be on the real Wikipedia, which is to say ... You can trust most of it, there is a lot of it you can't trust at all, and good luck telling which parts you can trust and which parts you can't! ;)
(In other words, this is the skeleton to give structure to those things, but not fix them, so that there is room for the story to canonically contradict things said in the "From Wikipedia" pages, or develop aspects not mentioned in them.)
