It's maybe really late to be asking for advice with this, but I'm realizing again (as I did last time I began to write a longer piece) that I have trouble getting close/inside the head of my MC. It feels wrong to me that my protagonist would be harder to understand than her friends, family, or enemies, but she is.
I used to write only in first person and I didn't feel this distance, so maybe that was helpful. Lately I'm writing in third person because it seems I should learn to do it–and I know more people who enjoy reading third than first person. Thoughts, ideas?
