I don't have much to say about this one. I wrote it and left it unpublished for a very long time because it's a kind of five-finger exercise. Description rather than story. I remember having fun writing it—it wouldn't have gone on so long for so pointlessly if I if wasn't fun to write—but even at the time I recognized that I was just indulging myself. Rereading it now, as I was publishing it, I do feel like I did a pretty good job of getting into a character's psychology and personality, even though I am not really certain if it's an adequate or even accurate description of how a musician thinks. A lot of the "musical doubt" stuff was just a translation into musical performance of the kind writerly doubts that I know much better.
