Alright, so this chapter is very interesting in a lot of ways. I had mostly been assuming that Will getting free was an isolated effect somehow related to either his innate nature as a Stellae, his connection to the book, or Gerssdorff fuckery. Now that we know that it is in fact not strictly limited to Will, then I think what has happened is narrowed down to a possibility that we haven’t seen in the Book of Masks before outside of one very old and fairly forgotten route of the interactive.

I think that one of the masterminds, most likely Sean, let his lust for more golems get the best of them, and created too many, thus dividing his essentia too thinly and causing it to collapse. That would explain why the golem shells failed. Will’s mask exploded off him because the golem layer lost its animating magic, and nobody can wear a mask of themselves. But Zachary was wearing a mask of Marius, so while the golem layer lost its power, the mask itself still needed to be removed manually because the mask itself had no reason to reject who bore it. I think the picture is slowly becoming clearer here.

And so far, here is an updated list of the faces collected by the group that I will tentatively dub with the shitty name, the Seaninati. The faces they possess include Will Prescott, Robert Prescott, Martha Prescott, Harris Prescott, Umeko Prescott, Caleb Johansson, Jenny Ashton, Stephanie Wyatt, Erik Carstairs, Charles Witney, a Casey who I assume is Casey Sennik, Zachary Holzer, Jenna Greeley, some girl named Johanna, most likely Ethan Gilkey, Marius Hall, presumably Charlie Russo, and technically Sean Mitchell.
