11:04 A.M. Russel rounded on Bertrand, "You said you vacuumed!" Bertrand protested, "Just by the door! How sloppy were those people?" As they quibbled, the two butlers kept their voices low; Sir Arnold was soothing a headache in the crystal-chandeliered dining room. 3:16 P.M. In the kitchen, Bertrand employed a toothpick to pick out a confectionary sprinkle from underneath the rim of the inlaid, steel sink. Russel asked while watching him, "How did that--that sugar capsule even get in there?" Bertrand replied, "I don't have a clue." 9: 34 P.M. Sir Arnold and guests had swept promptly out from the ball room. Russel and Bertrand, looking on despairingly, had the maids attend to the actual sweeping. 11:04 P.M. Russel rounded on Bertrand, "I don't know! I'm to tired to think, okay?" At the door came a knock, followed by the unexpected appearance of a manservant with the even more unexpected addition of a port of sherry; the manservant presented the butlers the sherry, along with the words, "Sir Arnold sends this with regards to his thorough butlers," 11: 06 Russel and Bertrand look upon each other, and then they settle down by the hearth. |
