It can be as simple as "John would not return to Seattle for another six years". It doesn't have to be the first sentence of the new section, but you want to get it into the first paragraph so the reader can place themselves. It's hard to suggest more examples without knowing more context.

If there's a way to indicate there will be a large time skip at the end of the previous section, that will also help.

And you might use a chapter break or full page break if you're not using numbered or titled chapters.
