Somehow that statement "Those who don't listen must feel" doesn't make sense to me. I think I know what you mean, but it seems stilted, too formal.

As a parent, and I know I'll may be trashed for saying this, sometimes you have to get the attention of a child that is acting so badly they are out of control. A few swats on the butt. Not beating anywhere else, there is a lot of padding on your behind. That is enough to stop the action.

Since Vincent never had a child and never had to experience one being angry, unruly, out-of-control, it was easy for him to judge that woman. Did Vincent never misbehave as a child? But to his credit, he senses that the mother is doing what she thinks is the only option to regain control of the situation.

So, I think conflict between Vincent and Laura is what we're witnessing.
